It depends on what you mean...most countries have a military, but it is very reduced...

Norway, for instance, as only a small armed forces...and most of their soldiers just go where the UN goes.

Japan does not have an aggressive military...that is to say, after WWII, they were told not to have a proper military, so the military they have is purely to protect themselves...but not to attack anyone.

I guess people survive because they have to. And because they do not believe in war.

Most of the countries without a standing military pass their defense responsibility on to other, larger neighboring countries, INCLUDING THE UNITED STATES. The ones who don't, have a "Regional Security System", a paramilitary police force, or voluntary military, police, and border control. I'm not aware of any countries that have NO existing means of defense whatsoever.

By the way, Babyface - Canada DOES have a large military force, and Switzerland has an army which is also responsible for the defense of Liechtenstein.

Since you mention Costa Rica, I guess you didn't know that they DO have a defense force : a 4400-strong Civil Guard that is complemented by a largely military-trained police force. They are not "defenseless."

Mike W - Vatican City doesn't have an army, but it doesn't need one; it's defense is the responsibility of the Italian army. It also has the ceremonial "Swiss Guard" which acts as a security police force.

Monica - Noway has the Norwegian Defense Forces, which numbers about 50,000 personnel; strength during full mobilization is 110,000 combatant personnel. They also have mandatory military service for males. They have an army, navy and air force, and work mainly with NATO, not the U.N. They also have a Special Forces and three civilian defense agencies.

It may be true that there are countries without "standing military forces," but even those countries aren't without defense forces of some sort ... which makes your question about "why can't America do this" invalid -- especially since many of these countries depend on US to defend THEM.

These few countries without militaries are "free loaders" that rely on powerful allies for protection but contribute nothing for that security. Costa Rica has a no military policy but depends on the US for protection is a perfect example. It is morally wrong for a country not to protect it's own people from attack.

Answer is: they don't go without military protection. Thanks to NATO and other mutual defense agreements in which the USA picks up most of the tab and even leaves the gratuity, countries with no or minimal military forces voluntarily shelter deep under Mama USA's military skirt and have played 50+ years of hypocritical peek-a-boo,never missing an opportunity to slam big Mama with hateful anti-USA jibes. The pampered and protected, supposed allies won't actually spend their own GDP to protect their own safety.Think Mama should clear out them that won't fund their own military protection. Guess they'd have a choice to be INVOLUNTARILY contained under Putiussia or under the PRC military "umbrella".22:53 ET Vatican has the Swiss guards, the Swiss have the duty/right to have the govt issued firearm in the house for militia self protection. OK asker, just which specific country have you found that is without some formal system of self defense?

Well I'd like to know of what country has absolutely NO kind of protection and yet thrives; both economically and socially.

The other thing is that this country is actually SO successful, it MUST have "security". Not only here, but to protect its partners; ie., the UK.

But yes, it would be lovely to be ignorant, young and dumb to think of this world as one where humans could just co-exist without animosity. Unfortunately, there are too many money-thirsty creeps in this world, to live peacefully.

In other words, open your eyes. Read a little history and see the continuous mistakes that are made. Like socialism.

America can't survive without a military because someone in this hateful world has to stand up for freedom.

Can you imagine what the world would be like if Hitler had won WWII. Hitler actually conquered all of mainland Europe. If we had not helped Britain with military resources in the beginning years, Germany would have been able to hold Europe, press east ward into Russia and link up with Japan in the Middle East and China.

That was the plan brother.
Then What?
Then they lay siege to the rest of the world.

Did you know that Japan and Germany both had nuclear material when we defeated them. They were both on their way to a bomb.
If we did not stand up to them with our military, then we would have never weaponized a nuclear bomb, but those terrible people would have been able to.

After we (helped) defeated them we withstood communism advance into the nations we just destroyed.

Sorry brother, it's not us that would not have survived without our military. The world would be in total darkness without our fathers and grandfathers. Don't extinguish the light that has been passed on to you. Stand up for country--never insult her!

Other countries can survive with out a military because they have other super powers such as the US, UK to proctect them in their time of need. America can't survive without a military force because of the way we live..FREE.. SORRY just not how it works I am in the Navy and I have been to places in africa, Middle east, and asia that really do rely on the US Military so to say they can do just fine without one is far from the truth. But hey I am just another military man who loves my job.

Nearly every nation in the world has a military. Most are not as technologically superior as our own, nor as large as China's or North Korea's. Most nations maintain at least a National Guard-type fighting force for short-term defense and ceremonial duties.

The reason they can maintain a small military is because the US is always ready and willing to go in and defend them.

I believe there is probably an armed forces in every country, no matter how small, there is still one. If necessary, I'm sure they probably have militias. I also remember hearing that one of the European countries has a very small armed forces because of their geographic location. They are surrounded by mountains, making it extremely difficult to be invaded, and to supply troops the invading troops.

The only country that comes to mind, that doesn't have it's own army, in modern times at least, is Vatican City.
