For a "pulled together" look, should it continue the color of the duvet or blanket or the color of the sheets? Or can it be a completely different color?

Either way. Personally, I like a color that complements the duvet color rather than matching it.

Definitely go for valance colour that complements your bedroom carpet as well as the duvet. Personally we have a moulted brown carpet. I have chosen a deep cream valance to compliment a sage brown duvet. To offset these colours I incorporated a light dusty crimson set of sheets with the pillows being a mix of creams, pinks and browns. It really looks effective. Have fun with your new bedroom look.

1] make it the primary color of the duvet/spread
2] make it the color of the carpet
3] make it the color of the walls
4] buy a lace one, in white or cream
