Passports are now needed for any air travel.
Travel by land or sea requires either a passport OR official photo I.D. (drivers license) and proof of citizenship (birth certificate), until Jan 2008.
Social Security Card is NOT considered a form of I.D. or proof of citizenship, and will not be accepted as such.
You may be able to get into Canada without proof of citizenship, but it will be a hassle to get back into the U.S. without it.
Here is the link to the resource, so you can check out that my information is correct.

First of all your social security card IS NOT a form of identification and the card and your number should be guarded carefully. Currently if you cross the border by land they would like Two pieces of photo id or one piece and a birth certificate) or a passport. If you travel by air or water you will need a passport to get back into the U.S. By next January you will require a passport to get back into the U.S.by land travel as well.

If you are driving you will be asked for your license. The Americans may also ask to see your car registration; the Canadians may ask for verification that you have enough auto insurance to comply with Canadian requirements (you can ask your insurance company for a Canadian Insurance compliance certificate).
If you do have a passport it makes things easier and quicker.
If you are flying in you MUST have a passport for returning to the USA, although the Americans have just announced that Ontario drivers licenses, which are digitally encoded, can substitute.

I would suggest looking into getting your birth certificate, because a drivers license and SSC really isn't proof of citizenship (and I'd get a passport soon).

You should really look that one up. They're moving over to passports soon, but you can still use the bc to get back in. It doesn't matter going into Canda, but for coming back you should check with the authoritahs to see if you can use something else.
