I have 400-500 negatives that I would like to convert to CD's. Walgreen's wanted to charge me 39 cents for each picture. Any suggestions on how I might be able to do this more cost effectively? Thanks in advance.

I second the choice of negative scanner. My lab also charges $.39 per scan. That is very time consuming to do, and we have to set aside a block of time just to do the individual scans, so it ties up the machine.

If the poster above knows where to get a decent negative scanner for $150 bucks, he needs to spill the beans! My estimate is about $500 or more. BUT, when you finish with it, you should be able to re-sell for about what you paid, negative scanners hold their value very well.

If the final product isn't critical, you might check into getting a flatbed scanner with a negative/slide attachment. Cheaper, and the final quality is not as good, but for small prints and simple storage, they do ok. A flatbed scan would actually probably be as good as a mass-market lab scan.

Getting them done at a retailer like Wal Mart, or CVS is an option, but there is another way. You can buy a Negative scanner and do it all yourself. The resolution at which you can scan varies, but you can get the pics onto a CD and depending on the resolution (which I'm not sure of) get high quality prints made from the CD. A decent scanner will probably cost about $150-$200, which is pretty close to what you're going to spend anyway, but you'll always have the option to put your negs to CD whenever you want. Good luck and I hope this helps.

I am in the process of doing this too. I don't know if you have a Longs Drugs where you live but they charged me $2.99 per disc, with 50 images on each. The only annoying part is you have to stand there and get the slide numbers off of all your negatives and fill out the numbers on their form. Much cheaper than a per print charge tho. Good luck!

Where I live in Texas we have a grocercy store chain called HEB and they would be ten times cheaper. Just give them several days to get it done. Look into Wal-Mart or your own big chain supermarket. Walgreens is always over priced.
