You get to defend the values your country considers important.
You will form bonds and friendships you will never achieve in civilian life.
You will get to use weapons and see things the average person never will.
You will probably get to travel ;-)
You will get free medical care and the best retirement package in the working world.
You will learn skills that can pay big money if you decide to reenter the civilian world.
In short, there are a bunch of reasons for joining the military. Recent events in Iraq have done much damage to the perception of joining the military as a career, but historically it's been a pretty good route to some rewarding experiences.

To serve one's country is a very popular reason, but I believe it is just an answer people give when they can't think of anything else to say. I joined the military to get my college loans paid off, travel and excitement (hopefully not to the sandbox) and because they offered me the job I wanted (Public Affairs Specialist). That was my logic for joining the military.

I don't think joining or being in the military can be a fully logical decision.

The cold rationale one could use is that 1) someone has to do it and 2) it's a means to an end i.e, tuition for school.

But I think that most people have an emotional sense of duty to their country and to their fellow man and the need to protect their loved ones.

For some people is in their blood,my family comes from a long line of military,my husband's Grandfather served in WW1, his father served in WW2, my husband and his brother served in Vietnam,I served in the Navy, our older son served in Desert Storm, now our youngest son is in Iraq. We are very proud of our military heritage, we've met many great and wonderful people, seen the world and served the best country in the world.
God bless our troops.

You survive basic training to move on to other areas
Build experience
On your own (there is not enough money in military life with kids)
If you are a lifer-pension is ok and usually in addition to other pension or pensions from other jobs
When you least expect it and you do the paperwork right-
the military experience or dividend is there for you...

it can offer a young person a lot of life skills
You can further your education and get into things that you normally couldnt afford...ie..helicopter pilot..airplane pilot...you can be trained as a medic or nurse ...you get a pension in the end, all benefits, they look after you feed you you go places ...you know if you waddle through high school and havent a clue what to do..instead of getting pregnant and being a welfare case or getting high all the time and burning your brains out...why not do something worth while that might make something out of you.You dont all go off to war and get killed...try it sometime they just might help you....

Sometimes it's just the best thing for you. Some people need to straighten out their life, financial problems, or possibly you couldn't find any other type of employment.

It's different for everybody, but here's some of the thinking:

1. I need money to go to college, and they'll give it to me in exchange for 3-4 years of my life.

2. I don't want to go to jail, so I'll enlist to get the judge off my back.

3. I can get training that will get me a good job when I get out, and I get to see the world for free.

4. My country has been good to me, and I want to give something back.

5. So, when do I get to shoot things and blow stuff up?

The military can take a spoiled, self-centered, irresponsible brat and turn him/her into a better person.
