The following is an introduction to an excellent article on fresh water plants and their movement from a salt water environment. I think the site will answer all of your questions.
Freshwater barrier ponds are all different. Their formation, size, and location with respect to the salty shore, play a vital role in their composition. In order to understand a freshwater barrier pond we must explore the pond's history, how it was formed, where the fresh water comes from - precipitation in the form of rain and snow, or a nearby river or spring - and how much, if any, saltwater it receives from salt spray and high tides during storms. All these factors affect the pond environment and its development as a freshwater ecosystem.
