I called her back the next day and left my own message, but now she won't call me back. I've called a couple of times the past few days and she doesn't answer her phone, but someone I spoke to at reception said she's been in the office. I've finally given up. How weird is that? Someone calls YOU about a job and now doesn't even want to speak with you?

Likely they had many resumes to apply for the same job... she left a message for you... but could be someone else was available, or responded faster than you did. Its not professional to be sure, she should have at least let you know. But, missing a call... probably missed the job as well.
Bummer.

Comming from someone who has done this......

We're hiring for an immediate position, I scope out over 200 resumes, running searches for key words and make the initial calls to those who pass my own test, because the position is for immediate fill, secondary review by that positions manager get done at the same time and not everyone makes it through the manager's list of requirments. And/or so many applicants have already set up interviews there's no time for more.....

Granted its very rude to not respond, but sometimes there is no time. I live in a world of email, I'll always send an email letting them know, but things slip by,,,

I've been in that situation. I applied for a job and actually went on the interview, well while in the interview I told them I was a hard and diligent worker and they told me that they did not need anyone who was trying to place "HARD" work into the job. I called back after a few days and they never called me back. Keep your head high and never give up. The experience you just had will make you a stronger person towards the game of rejection. Try not to take it personally and you will be fine.

send an email if you have one. companies track those better. thank them for the call, ask them to call you on a good number to arrange to come in. Sounds like you jumped the gun on your voice message and they reconsidered or they moved on to more immediate people. Do not get to hung up on it. Things happen, just keep searching and refining your skills. Remember the application only gets the next step, after that people must view you as a best friend, courteous, and professional to get the job.

Thats not professional at all.
I'm surprised that a person with those ethics is in a job to hire and judge ethics.

That is very bizarre. You should be happy you didn't get the job; I can't imagine working around people who act like that.
