Giant is a very good brand, also check for Specialized, Cannondale, Trek. It just depend how much you want to spend and what riding you want to do.

Try to ride them before buying, and pay attention in how a bike fits you. Have the bike shop adjust the saddle height to your size, and feel if you feel too cramped/stretched out, to tall, to low, etc..

You did not mention what type of bike you were looking for. Road or Mountain?

If you are looking for a mountain bike, mtbr.com is a very good place to start your research. They have a customer review section that will list rating, cost, specs, etc. Once you find a few good that you are interested in, visit your Local Bike Shop and take the bikes for a test ride.

That is like asking, what is the best car? Or the best house?
First, what do you want it for?
Second, what price range (60$ or 16,000$)?
Then you go to three different bike stores, tell them what you want and let them show you their options. The Internet is a good way to get some comparisons too.
