Personally I have a Giant dual suspension mtb. I would seriously look at buying a hard tail Giant if I was in your situation. Great value for money bikes. When I was looking to by a mtb it was between Giant and Mongoose. Obviously Giant won.

The Kona is a hardtail MTB, so front suspension fork but no rear suspension. You will not get a decent full suspension bike for this sort of price, and you probably don't need it. If you don't know if a bike is a hard tail or full sus just by looking at it, you almost certainly don't need a full sus. Full sus will be heavier and more expensive, and really only needed if you're doing some serious off-road riding on pretty rough ground. A hard tail will be fine for any sort of tarmac or track and for moderately rough ground. Work out what sort of riding you will be doing, then find the bike that fits your needs. You may be better off with a hybrid or cyclo-cross if you'll be cycling on tarmac or decent tracks most of the time. Even if you end up buying online, visit your local bike shop, chat about what you want from a bike, and try a few for size, style and specification.

My hubby has a Specialized Rockhopper and he LOVES it, its very comfy to ride and copes well with both road riding and riding rough. Dont forget to actually sit on and ride the bike/s youre interested in as sometimes they LOOK good but dont suit your riding style for whatever reason. Have fun! :O) xx

Giant, Specialized, Trek, Cannondale makes good hardtails that should fall around your price range. I don't know which models, but if you're in England you should look in local bike shops to see which models they have around there. There are severan european bike models that are good, so you should do some shopping there.
