$200 on a good sale fare; $400 otherwise. Here's a look at Los Angeles-NYC for the upcoming 10 months: http://www.farecompare.com/search/year.html?departure=LAX&destination=NYC&cabin=Coach&tripType=roundtrip&nonstops=false&p=1 This site rates fares with stars; 1 star is not so good, but 4 stars means it's a sale fare at the cheapest levels in a year.
A tip: there's so much new competition that you should search to "NYC" which will check LaGuardia, Newark, and JFK airports simultaneously. But also check nearby airports in Calif--not just LAX, but also LGB, ONT, BUR, SNA, and even SAN if that would work for you. Also, not just SFO, but OAK, SJC, and SMF if those would work for you. JetBlue has done well from the smaller outlying airports in SoCal.

It runs anywhere between $250-350 depending on the time of year.
Of course you should check prices with the normal travel sites but keep in mind that both Jet Blue and Southwest Airlines don't use those sites. Jet Blue's hub is JFK, and Southwest just started flying out of La Guardia (I think).

Where in California?
Just about every airlines flies the JFK/LGA to LAX or SFO direct nonstop routes. (AA, DL, CO, etc...) Usually in the winter, you can find round trip flights for $199 or so.
In the summer, it's usually around $400 round trip.

Best rates are here: www.kayak.com
I used this site. I travel a lot. Try different days of the week. I think Tuesdays are usually cheaper.

check:

Plus you can put fare alerts to let you know the trend. To-day, they are going down, wait a couple of days at least!
