Dog is 8 months old and ever since the weather started getting nicer, we've been leaving him out for a half hour here and there, sometimes an hour or so. Anyway, our problem is that his dog keeps getting wrapped up in his leash. Leash is a wire on with the protective coating on it (supposedly a no tangle leash at that), plus we tried a chain and he wrapped himself up in that, too. Dog has plenty of toys outside, bones, water and isn't bored. He just has a fascination with getting wrapped up in his leash. The only thing I can think of to combat this is a large kennel. My husband doesn't like that idea, he thinks some kind of chain or leash should be sufficient. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks!

Yes, we do walk our dog...a lot. Our dog gets plenty of love and attention and is well taken care of. It would be nice if people could just answer the question without accusing people of being rotten pet owners.

It's not the leash, chain, or rope that is getting him tangled its the dog going in circles. I think that your best bet is to get an outdoor kennel, or fence in your back yard so that he can play outside without having strings attached:). Good Luck.

There is one like a clothes line, over the dog's head. You attach the dog's leash to a "shuttle", this wheeled thingie that rolls up and down the clothes line. There is enough slack in the leash for him to lay down and get comfortable, but not enough for him to get tangled, because it's all above his head, not on the ground.
It's a really great solution, but you need 2 trees or posts or something to hang it on.
Invisible fences might be an option for you if you can't get a real fence. They are kits with wires, a collar, and some small flags. You bury the wires a few inches in the ground, put the flags up to mark the boundary, put the collar on the dog, and a small shock when he gets near the buried wire will keep the dog penned up.
Good luck,
I can look for the clothesline thingie online if you want. I can't remember what it's called, but I could probably find it.

You in general will not like my reply however i do not feel it's proper for anydog to be chained open air, no matter what state or what breed of dog. Chaining a canine will also be very detrimental if there is not someone home. I believe that a fenced yard is the excellent, but for some just isn't an option. In that case, i would endorse constructing a kennel that the dog could be in for excercise and potty occasions, however I suppose a canine will have to live within the apartment as a loved ones accomplice.

you probable won't like my answer yet i don't think of it rather is stable for anydog to be chained outdoors, no be counted what state or what breed of dogs. Chaining a dogs would nicely be very risky if there isn't definitely everyone abode. i think of that a fenced backyard is the main suitable, yet for some isn't an determination. if so, i might recommend development a kennel that the dogs must be in for excercise and potty circumstances, yet i've got self assurance a dogs could stay in the abode as a relatives better half.

That's exactly why those things are no good.. You are lucky he just got tangled up.. Lots of people find their dogs dead with chain wrapped so tightly around the neck that the dog can't call for help, can't get untangled and can't breath.
I would build a run in the yard if the dog needs to stay outside.. It's safer, and kinder.

He needs a fenced area. You shouldn't tie him up to a stake, I don't care how many toys he has. He's a puppy he wants to run and play, as well as he needs to do that. If you don't have a fence area, why don't you take him for a walk? People get turned in all the time for having a dog tied to a skate, tree whatever. Please stop doing that or someday you may come out to a dead dog by of strangulation. If you can't give him the proper care maybe you should think of placing him with someone who can. Sorry to be so hard on you, but you asked...

put up a runner cable. they can run for what ever length you have it up at and they wont get tangled as long as you dont put a center tree in the middle. just one straight line with nothing to get into. the cable runs from one tree or post to another one about 6 foot high and then you have another cable coming down like a lead but you have to get the wheel or slide peice so it dont tear the cloth lead. You can use one of those metal clapse thing and then use on the other end and hook that to its collar. it will be content all day long. just keep a water bucket in her reach if she gets thirsty.

You can put up a line like a clothesline amd give him some room where he can run back and forth along the line. He will need some shade there so he doesn't get too hot, but if only out for 30 min or so should be fine.

Tying a dog up outside unattended is against the law in many places and if it isn't it is irresponsible. If your whole yard isn't fenced then you need to create an area specifically for the dog to be contained in. This is usually called a run. It is large enough so that the dog can run. If you can't create an outside area for this dog you should consider giving this dog to someone that can. The dog needs a play area and someone that knows better than to tie it to a stake in the ground unattended. Sorry to be blunt, just thinking the best for the dog.

If u go to the store they a cable cord which is called a trolley u tie both ends to a tree sperate from each other and the second cord u would hook one end to the trolley and the other to your dog and that way he can go wherever he wants but wont get tangled and if he does its very easy for him to untangle himself by himself
