How old does the puppy have to be before he can be neutered?

It used to be the 4 to 6 months recommendation but now dogs are being neutered as young as 8 weeks. Which is better? First find out where your local shelter sends dogs to be neutered because this is the place that will do the most neutering and have the most experience. The places that have the most experience have the least amount of complications. Why? Because they have seen it all. Call them up and ask them how young of a puppy will they neuter. Which is better? Doesn't seem to matter so younger is always better because what you do not want to happen is the dog developing sexual maturity. This can start many behavioral problems that will need correcting.

Generally, vets recommend that a dog be between 4-6 months old when they are neutered. You should take your puppy to the vet within 10 days of adoption to make sure he is healthy and to start his vaccination series, at that time your vet can discuss neutering with you.

Six months is the rule of thumb. You can have it done earlier though. Every vet is different. Hope you do have him neutered cause it will reduce the risk of prostate cancer and also they wont run off to a female in heat. They can smell them miles away.
