We belong to a protestant church in VA that while preaching all the evils of the world, participate in pagan celebrations like Halloween, Easter Bunny (egg hunts) and also (during service) announce that they will have sales of items that while most of the time are related to the church, it is not always the norm. The might sell books, jewelry, clothing, etc, and only a percentage goes to the church. Is something wrong with this picture?

I though this would go against the merchants in the temple teachings in the New Testament.

Could be, but I would look at the service and see if the name of Jesus is being lifted up, and if the people are being feed, and if the people really know and love God. All the other things, maybe don't get too rigid about it. Let there be some life. Many church members have started schools, book stores, travel agencies, etc. It really has not harmed the service. Just worship God, love your brothers and sisters, and enjoy your life. God wants you to enjoy your life.

Halloween should be forbidden at the church. However, Autumn/Fall festvil with some Halloween stuff is ok but not alot. My church has Easter Egg hunts and they are stuffed with Bible verses and candy. So I am not sure what's problem with that. Enjoy yourself when we leave the world we won't take anything with us exception of our Salvation.

The only thing on your list that the Bible mentions is selling things at the Lord's house and turning it into a market place instead of a house of prayer. Of course that was in reference to when God had an official temple building while now the temple of the Lord is the bodies of born again believers.

1 Peter 1:23 since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God;

1 Peter 2:5 you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

As to Halloween or Easter activities here is what the Bible says in general about things like that.

Romans 14:4 Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand. 5 One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind.

Romans 14:19 So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding. 20 Do not, for the sake of food, destroy the work of God. Everything is indeed clean, but it is wrong for anyone to make another stumble by what he eats. 21 It is good not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that causes your brother to stumble. 22 The faith that you have, keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who has no reason to pass judgment on himself for what he approves. 23 But whoever has doubts is condemned if he eats, because the eating is not from faith. For whatever does not proceed from faith is sin.

As long as the church is edifying believers to prepare them to serve the Lord and carrying out the great commission of spreading the gospel then they have a lot of leeway when it comes to how they exercise their freedom in Christ. If you think that having activities on Easter or Holloween might be "a cause of stumbling" then the proper thing for you to do is to bring it up to the Pastor or the church Elders and to express your concerns to them about the matter.

It is no more wrong than the beginning Christian Church taking the religions of the Greeks, changing it a little, and making a new religion. People could convert and still follow the same religion. You do what has to be done to ''get the people in''.

Yes it is . The bible never prohibited such things. If in doubt read the 10 commandments . Though shalt have no other gods before me. Now if you start worshipping the Easter bunny well that's different. God never said though shalt be a grey miserable prude.

If you don't like what your church is doing, do what many Christians do: Go off and start a church of your own! That way, you can be "right" all the time.

... well at least they know that the traditions are Pagan and not original Christian stuff...

Though I seriously think you should reconsider belonging to a church that is so wholly intolerant of other (and older) religions.

Egg hunts are evil. You're going to hell just for associating with these people.
