If not everything in the Bible should be taken literally, then why Heaven and Hell should?
What if God meant by Heaven: vacation, fun, ice cream; and by Hell: school, paris hilton and toothache?

Well when Jesus tells the parable of Lazarus and the rich man he makes it very clear about the physical pain the rich man endures after death - he begs for just one drop of water for relief

It's good you're asking and it's good to be sure before you die. There have been many near-death experiences from believers and nonbelievers that have gone to hell, depending on whether or not they accept Jesus Christ as savior or not. The whole Bible is the word of God and should be accepted as such. Going to church, listening to the preaching and teaching and your own daily Bible study will help you to understand the Bible. I would choose NIV or New King James versions since the vernacular is translated into more modern english.

Ask God by his Holy Spirit to show you the way.

As long as we are breathing hell and heaven will only be a state of mind and we do live them here at different points in most of our life's.

The people of old had nothing to do but think so don't sell them short on their intelligence, they knew what made us tick.

Maybe they were telling us about ourselves, remove the religious aspect from the bible and read it as a story about mankind.

The only difference it's about us two to seven thousand years ago, not much has changed has it

Heaven is a place where Spirit persons live. Like God and Jesus and trillions of Spirit persons we cannot imagine what it is like because we are flesh and blood. But I think heaven is in most peoples minds a paradise earth. That is what God means by us going to heaven. so in that case it is symbolic.
Because in other places in the bible it says people will live on the earth.
the same with Hell, it means death dieing and a going away.
Like he told Adam: For dust you are and to dust you will return. So the meaning for hell would be a going away or non existance.

What if Hell and Heaven exists? Even if it would be a state of mind, wouldn't you want Heaven?

What if? Trust me, it is a state of mind. Nothing but a result of brainwashing and propaganda administered by religious zealots and ignorant followers. To take the bible literally would cause you to become a certified wacko.

Look for the spiritual meaning of passages, rather than literal in the bible, if you really want to move to higher ground.

Perhaps pleasure and pain in the mind while on earth is mere shadows of things to come in eternity? The 'future' is for a long time, therefore called eternity and we will spend it somewhere! Peace.
