Twelve is full time. Unless you have a really good reason for taking fewer hours than this, twelve should be your minimum. It helps you get your maximum Pell grant, scholarships, etc, and may be needed for student driver insurance discounts or to stay on your parent's health insurance.

Some colleges also impose a maximum credit hour limit, especially for new students. This is supposed to be to keep you from getting in over your head when you're just starting out. If you feel you can (and want to) handle more hours than that, discuss it with your councilor.

Aside from that, it's all up to you. I, personally, like to take at least fifteen hours (usualy five classes). That way, if there's a class I'm totally bombing or that I really hate, I have room to drop one and still be full time. I wouldn't recomment more than eighteen though, because you'll have no time for anything else.

First year start with 12 first term, if you do well take 15 next term. It also depends on the classes and the hours. A 1 hour lab takes a lot of time and work to get a good grade. Math and science will take more time than entry level English.

Unless you have always been a strong student don't start with more than 12 or 13. Chances are your high school education didn't really prepare you for college.

As other posters have pointed out, 12 hours is considered full time for various programs; I had to take 12 hours to get my maximum VA and Social Security payments.

Take 12 for now. In your first semester, that'll be quite a hand full. Take it slowly, and if 12 isn't too bad on you, go for 15 the next and so on and so forth.

Last semester I took 15, and it was a bit rough, but I managed. I suggest 12 for now!

Best of luck.

I take 16 and I like it..but I would say anywhere between 12-15 hours would be fine.

If you are working, take no more than 12, if you are not working and you are actually going to study alot and do your homework, I think 16 is more than enough. 12 should be the recommendation either way though, until you figure out if you can take more, or if it is too much to handle.
