well if they want to go the more pricey route they could buy a live trap and set it with food-that wouldn't hurt the rat and they'd catch it......what we do when my hammies get loose is bait our own live "trap"-what we do is get a large bucket that they wouldn't be able to climb out of and then we stack books like a staircase next to the bucket and in the bottom of the bucket put a lot of good smelling foods like oranges and pineapples and stuff then let the bucket sit over night, the rat should be inside the next day. Just make sure that the bucket is big enough that the rat can't climb out and that the bucket trap is set up in a room that the rat has been spotted in often (or recently) and also make sure that the food smells good and is safe for the rat to eat (what I mentioned above should be safe in moderation)
We got this idea out of a book and it has always worked for us

I guess this rat isn't too friendly? Pet rats aren't usually hard to catch once you find them.
You can buy a live trap from a hardware store or nursery, or maybe borrow one from an animal shelter. If you're handy enough, maybe you could make one. You just bait it and put it in an area where you've seen the rat, according to the instructions.
Another hint is to place a light sprinkling of baby powder along the walls and across doorways, then the next day look for footprints.
Also, at night, make everybody be quiet and listen for rustling sounds of the rat moving around.

If the rat was a single rat ( Shame, shame! ) then the simplest option is to make sure that the cage is available to it.
chances are that you will find that the animal will go back in there for food. If not a single animal, than the humane trap idea would probably be best.
Close all doors and place soft food, ie baby food in all rooms, 'till you can establish which room the animal's hiding in.
Once you know where the animal is, then set your trap. And wait...
Once you get the animal back, do not do such a silly thing again:- or change your friends *G*

She is sitting in the corner because she is not used to it. How old do you think she is, she may be old and tired. I would pet her more rats love attention and humans, this will make her feel more comfortable. If she shows any signs of being scared I would put her back in the cage for awhile or let her run around your room so she can get out of the cage for awhile (if she is easy to catch) I would also try more hand feeding rats love to eat and its an easy way to bond with her. The rat will not die as long as it is drinking and eating, and not super depressed. If the rat is young you probably want to get her a friend, because rats are so social they get depressed without other rats. Introduce them correctly, you can google it or email me. Also when you put her in the cage don't put her on the top level, put her at the bottom so she has to make her way up to the top even if its very fast she went through the other levels. If you are looking at her in the day she might be resting, rats are nocturnal. One of my rats sleeps with her eyes open so it looks like she is just sitting there but she is sleeping. Just letting you know pet rats can escape and breed. She may have been born wild even though she looks like a pet rat.

you can call the shelter and ask for a humane trap that will trap him and it will not hurt him but it will catch him. wow that is the only way i can think of how to catch the little guy. i breed rats and i have had this happen to me as well and i went to my local shelter and i rented a humane rat trap to catch her and it worked but it took me about 1 week to tame her all over again. i hope this helps and good luck.

use the bucket and string trick. get a bucket, prop it up with a stick that has some string attached to it, put some food under the bucket and wait for the rat to come for the food and pull the string :D
