It is cheaper at the airport if any seats are avaiable and you jump on it a soon as it's announced.I flew from Boston to Houston not to long ago and they had first class available just before boarding they announced and I held off to the last minute they started at $150.00 and went down to $75.00 thats when I bought the upgrade.

For a long haul like that, on United, I would definitely book it in advance and be prepared to pay the full first-class fare. United's policy is that upgrade-at-the-gate is NEVER offered until all of the frequent fliers on the flight have been upgraded. United's frequent fliers do not get unlimited free upgrades--- they get a certain number of coupons based on how much they fly; they tend to save these up to use on the long hauls. And United has a LOT of frequent fliers. I think your chances of being able to buy the discounted upgrade at the airport are going to be pretty low.

If you want to fly first class, you need to book it early as it's often the first part of the plane that sells out. If you try to upgrade when you get to the airport, they probably won't have any open seats in first class.

Up-grade ONLY if you pay either with cassh or miles!

Only USairways allows you to up-grade to Fist very cheap on "some" fligths!

If you are going First Class, check:
www.farecompare.com on their First Class part, and set a fare alert.

But it will be cheaper to book it as First.

Tip: If you book a Full Economy Fare "Y" you will be most likely bumped to First Class.

to-day such a trip will cost you:
USD909
against USD250 cheapest fare and
USD450 walk-up/very last minute/aiport rush price
