The binding part is the marriage license issued by the state. You can say pretty much any words you want.

There are some humanist ceremonies online - see link below for a sample. They're a lot like traditional ceremonies except we don't bring fictional characters into it. Well, not generally. I suppose some might do it in jest.

My husband and I wrote our own and everyone (Christian, Jews and atheists) said it was one of the nicest they'd been to.

You're real funny. You act like christians thought up the whole idea of marriage. Well guess what, sister, your wrong. Marriage has been around far longer than christianity. Why is it so hard for your brain to realize humans were around before christians? Believe it or not, many people like a little thing called free thought, and they write there own vows according to what is important to them, not according to what is important to someone else, and then they have a justice or any number of other people perform their sacred ceremony, as it should be - church, christians and "god" has nothing to do with it.

There's something binding called a contract, and it's a ceremony, not a ritual.

An atheist's marriage is just as legal and binding as anyone elses. Why on earth wouldn't it be?

Most atheists exchange vows in front of a JP. It would be a civil ceremony, not a religious one.

Marriage is a LEGAL contract between the couple, bound by the LAWS of the STATE. That's why you have to apply for a Marriage License to make it count. Religion/God is not necessary. A marriage between atheists is just as valid as any other.

You don't need some ancient book to read from in order for a marriage to be binding.

It is usually done by secular authority such as a Justice of the Peace or a Court Officer.

A marriage can be performed and legally recognized by the state (government) without any religious reference..

A bit less smugness a bit more research... and you will ask far less plebeian questions..

We just had a licenced atheist do ours 10 miles away from the nearest road in the mountains. She provided acceptable wording. No probs. ... My wife's Catholic, but not rabid at all.
