My favorite movies:
Amores Perros
Cansada de Besar Sapos....hard to find in the USA
La Ley de Herodes (Herod's Law)
Y Tu Mama Tambien (And Your Mother Too)
Sexo, Pudor, y Lagrimas
Santos
Ladies Night
Como Aqua Para Chocolate (Like Water for Chocolate)

If you can't find these movies, which I think all are Mexican, you can always buy your favorite DVD and put it with Spanish subtitles and/or audio. They may not match, but it'll help you. If you watch Latin American movies, there will be a good bit of slang, and that will help you learn some colloquial terms.

My favorite books:
El Principito- "The Little Prince" (originally in French, but a very easy read)
Anything by Gabriel Garcia Marquez is far more advanced, but once you get there you will really appreciate his magical realism which is unique to Latin American literature.
Like Water for Chocolate (which also has a movie) is also an easy read.

You can always go online and buy your favorite book translated into Spanish. Another trick is to buy children's books, which will be easy reads, and also provide some educational value of the culture, history, an mythology of any Latin American country.

Hey! It's a great idea to read books and watch movies in Spanish but it doesn't help that much if your not advanced. Go to this website http://www.colby.edu/%7Ebknelson/exercises/ It is a great site from Colby that has fun excercises. As far as books go, most books come in Spanish as well as English. I am currently reading The Five People You Meet In Heaven by Mitch Albom or Las Cinco Personas Que Encontaras En El Cielo. It's a great book and if you have difficulty with vocab go to www.wordreference.com it's an online dictionary but also has a verb conjugater as well as forums on the correct usage of words in sentences. Pan's Labyrinth is a great movie. It is in Spanish with English subtitles. I'm not sure if it's out on video yet though. Mar Adentro is great also. It deals with euthanasia. I wouldn't watch any movie dubbed in Spanish (i.e. Harry Potter) because the mouths do not match and, if you have seen the movie before, neither does the tone of the voices. But of course some Spanish is better than none.

I think its called The Sea Inside. Stars Javier Bardem as a quadraplegic. He is really good and totally lost in the part, doesn't look attractive at all. The Spanish is the brand spoken is Spain and not South America just in case you were wondering. There also another Javier Bardem flick where he is a layed off ship builder, also set in Spain. Also good.

Well, I cannot really give you something that is too easy to understand because easy literature isn't usually the best, you can try something by García Márquez (Cuentos Peregrinos, Cien Años de Soledad), Paulo Coelho is a Portuguese writer but his books are translated to Spanish and they aren't too complicated, the Spanish translation to The Little Prince is beautiful, Ernesto Sábato's books are excellent. I would reccommend you more but maybe the vocabulary can get a little too fancy. With respect to movies, watch anything by Almodóvar though the actors do speak very fast.

Movie: Like Water for Chocolate.

I've seen it with English subtitles. I can't say how difficult the Spanish is, but it's a great movie!

I also recommend you watch some Spanish TV, such as the Univision, Telemundo, or Telefutura networks. Put on the closed-caption option on your TV set. You could also rent English-language movies you know that have been dubbed into Spanish. This will help you pick up a few words.

There are many movies in Spanish but I´m not sure you
will understand the dialogues, you can read the subtitles while you are listening to the Spanish.
"Valentin"
"Diario de Motocicleta"
" Nueve Reinas"
These are Argentine movies.
Maybe you can go to your Library and get some Spanish
books there, and even DVDs or VCRs.
