I'm VERY athletic and I use my knees a lot. I'm only 12. I don't want my future athletic carreer to be affected by my knee problems. I play basketball a lot and sometimes when I jump my knees give out. Its mostly my left knee right under my knee cap. Some people said it might be stress fractures and others say its osgoods schlauter. I have no idea I just want help on how to save my knees before I can't play basketball any more.

First off you should know that Osgood Schlatter Syndrome usually affects active teenagers (more common in boys than girls) during growth spurts and usually resolves itself once the growth has stopped. This usually takes about a year or so. You should go to a doctor to have a proper diagnosis, if your knee pain continues.

Common treatments for Osgood Schlatter Syndrome is to get plenty of rest between activities. Let yourself have a break every other day or so from running or jumping and this should ease the symptoms. Do stretching exercises to strengthen your quadriceps, hamstring and calf muscles. You can also use ice packs to reduce any swelling in the knee joint and take anti-inflammatory medication (in moderation) like Tylenol to help with the pain.

I have the same problem. Women are more likely to tear their ACL and knee pain is usually a sign you are even more likely. Search google for exercises that help stretch your knee and keep it strong. And oshgood slaughter is a possibility, although that usually comes with pain from kneeling or even standing.
