i am 16 now and i didn't have a TV in my room until i was like 10...i honestly think it depends on the maturity and trust of the kid

Excuse me Mamae, but my kids have TVs in their rooms and they are not lazy and fat! I let my children have them so that I would not have to watch and hear their shows all the time and so that it would cut down on the fighting over which show/movie to watch. They are only allowed about 1 hour a day and the parental locks are on at all times. They are allowed more if they are sick and have to stay in bed all day. My daughter prefers to read over anything and will usually pick up a book over turning on the TV. My son won't sit still long enough to watch TV. He is usually off playing somewhere else and just try to keep him in the house at any time!
The amount of time for watching and whether or not to have a TV in the room would should depend on the child and not statistics.

IMO - no TV in the room. Many kids today watch TV instead of doing other things - like playing outside or sleeping at night time. If they have a TV in their room, you don't know how late they'll be up watching it.

Under 5 years old, they don't need to watch tv - if they do, 30 minutes a day is it. Over that age, an hour or two tops.

It depends. My twins are 2 (almost 3) and theu have a tv in their room, but they are only allowed to watch shows like Sesame Street, Dora, and other educational prgrams like Baby Einstein. Also they don't just sit and veg out in front of the tube. They play with toys and just listen to it more than anything else. Or we'll watch together and talk about what is going on. I also don't let them have it for more than 2-3 hours a day and make sure they get lots of other types of play and learning experiences. It really depends on how your child behaves when the tv is on. I dont think kids should veg out all day but how a child handles tv is a direct reflection of what the parents do to encourage them to do other activities. Also my boys do not have cable, just a dvd/vcr and they can't turn it on themselves. They are also not allowed to watch it at bedtime.

I wouldn't put a tV in a kids room. He will just be hooked, then if you want to watch TV with him, he'll just want to watch it by himself. He'll get used to the freedom, he won't go to sleep because he will be watching TV. I think the maximum hours of TV is 1 hour and 30 minutes. And maybe include math with it. Like say, you can either have 1 hour a day, or 8 hours a week. And if he picks the hour a day, then it's his choice. Give him choices, but don't make them OBVIOUS choices, just let him choose, see how responsible he is.

Personal advice is no at least not withotu rules. We put a cars tv in my sons bedroom for christmas just after he turned 2. He wanted to watch the cars movie 24/7 then one day he got mad and threw it off the table it was on and broke it. Not a big deal it's his own toy so he just has to go without. He used to go to bed great before the tv. We would turn on music for him and he would fall asleep. Once the tv was in there he would bounce of the walls wanting to watch a movie. He's easier without it but we went ahead and gave him another smaller tv with vcr to watch old disney vhs tapes sometimes during the day because he really likes to play alone. He has never had cable and he is no longer allowed to watch movies when falling asleep. Much more manageable with rules.

NO NO NO. unless you want your kid to be fat and lazy. If you child is under 2 no more than 30 min if at all and nothing violent and then 3-4 no more than an hour of educational tv that you watch with him/her. There are some great DVDs out there but you need to watch it with your child and allow them to learn. TV can be a great teaching tool if used correctly but if you want to be a parent that wants the most for the kid, then no TV until they are out of the house in their room. Actually a TV should never be in a bedroom. A bedroom is suppose to be for sleep and sex and nothing else but times have changed.

I really dont like TV in kids bedrooms. My parents reminded me that I had a TV very young. So, with that - we put one little TV in our almost 5 yr old sons room. His channels are controlled up to a certain channel & believe it or not, he is very good about it SO FAR! He harldly turns it on , but loves to watch the Yankees in his room! I think it depends on the child and the parents and the activity of the child. My child is very active & loves the outdoors, he goes to preschool & plays baseball at a club and will continue to summer camp! He is busy & doesnt "hang out " in his room! I guess it depends on the parents/kids & situation.
