Mercury is a heavy metal, and can do a lot of damage to your bloodstream and internal organs.

Handwashing with a scrub brush and plenty of soap is the best way to remove it.

Mercury on your skin won't do much. In addition, pure mercury needs to react with chemicals in order to be absorbed by living things. You could try washing your hands with vinegar, as the acetic acid may react with the mercury and thus make it easier to flush from your skin. If you're really worried, call your local Poison Control center.
