Regular store shelf bread contains 50% water, this water is released from the bread and absorbed into the cookies!

bread contains a lot of moisture and the moisture is what keeps the cookies soft. you could use a piece of apple or orange peel instead if you wanted, but the flavor will transfer to the cookies too whereas the bread will not flavor the cookies.

The cookies steal moisture from the bread. I think it's better to just divy the cookies up into multiple containers. They dry out from people getting cookies and opening the lid.

Cookies get moisure from the bread and if they start to get hard again change the bread put in fresh the bread will get hard
