That's a normal muscular spasm, it happens to everyone.

I've been told it's when the motor cortex of your brain falls asleep before the rest of your brain does. I don't know why that would make you twitch, but it sure does.

Sometimes I wake myself up from light sleep because I jerked awake after a very short dream, usually involving me falling or tripping.

a small jerk is normal. your body does it to try and wake you up when you are falling asleep. usually happens in the legs

i do that sometimes. usually i'm sorta in a half-sleep mode and i'm dreaming about falling or crashing. then my whole body has a spasm and i wake up fully.
but i don't really know the scientific reason behind it...

That is a neural dampening in your brain. It happens because it gives you an evolutionary advantage towards survival because prey cannot hear you stirring while you sleep.

It is perfectly normal.

I do that sometimes, too. Or wake myself up gasping for air. It's really strange. My best guess is that it is some form of apnia.
