Bound's hubby here:

You should be able to fire any shorter 12 guage shell out of a 3 1/2 chambered shotgun. You want to be careful because you'll have increased build up of plastic residue and powder fouling in the chamber area of your barrel. You also may have some timing problems when you cycle your shotgun. When in doubt, always consult the owner's manual, which you should be able to access on-line.

Good luck.

Yes it's no problem to do this, I have a Mossberg 835 in the 3 1/2" Ultra Mag but I usually only fire 2 3/4" shells because they are so much cheaper for plinking

Sure thing.

You can always shoot a shorter shotshell in a longer chamber.

NEVER the other way around.

A 3 1/2 chamber can take anything from 3 1/2inches down to 2 1/2 inches (if you can find any) as long as they are the same gauge of course!

Yes, you can safely fire a shell of shorter length than what the barrel is proofed for. Just Never the opposite. This will still function correctly with the pump. However, there are some shells (Aguila 1.5 inch) that do not work well. In some pump actions, they have feeding issues.

Yes, no problem. Like a .38/.357 magnum, you can fire the "little rounds" in the "big gun", but not the other way around; that's why they made the more powerful rounds longer.
