Thanks for all the responses. We can not open a new account yet. My husband had a very severe case of Identity theft and one company has even tried to drain our account (they have his ss#). This is the safest/easiest way we know.... so we are looking for a way to cash this w/out an account.

Unless you open a new account, you probably can't cash the check without any fees. If you open a bank account, they won't charge fees to cash a tax refund check. If you are willing to pay a fee, the question becomes "Where can't you cash the check?".

If you don't have a bank account you will have to pay a fee. Why not open an account at the bank of your choice and at the same time cash the irs check. That way you probably won't have to pay a fee.

Why not use it to open a new account? That might be the easiest way to cash it at no charge.
