When I was dieting, I was aiming below 1000 calories. Is that unhealthy while exercising? Is it unhealthy just to do it? Also, the less calories I take in, the faster I can lose weight. So, if I were to decrease my calories to 1000 or less, what amount of time should I do this for, before stopping?

You should not go below 1000! If exercising, you should eat 1200-1800 calories per day. If you eat a lot less than that you're body starts automatically saving energy as you're not getting enough calories.

never go that low. body needs 50cal/hour just for functioning (if you are in coma) and thats 1200cal/day.
by undereating you only lose water weight and muscle not fat plus your metabolism slows down dramatically which will make fat loss in future sooo much harder. AND as soon as you start eating normal you will gain more than lost back.

find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, light weight training
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

You will lose weight eating under 1000 cals a day,but as soon as you go back to an increased calorie diet, you will gain it back.Aim for a consistant 1,200 a day and lose it slowly and permanently.
