Why do Evangelical Protestants think that by merely quoting snipettes of scripture this is "proof text' for their individual interpretation? Do they ever consider they are taking verse out of context without providing the listener and reader a narative to follow? Do they ever consider examining how first Christianity interpreted the same verse?
Why recreate the wheel?

I'm go'in to give you a free heal'in for that answer sister spirito.

Ivan sounds good on the surface however the main fact behind the proof is --the fact of an infallible, teaching Church-- which leads one naturally to an answer to the problem that troubled the Ethiopian eunuch (Acts 8:31): How is one to know what interpretations are right? The same Church that authenticates the Bible, that establishes its inspiration, is the authority set up by Christ to interpret his Word.

Jack don't know Jack...sorry I had to say it. There were so many things that changed with the Constantine version of Christianity. A major one was Sunday becoming an important day of the week for religious services. The original 10 Commandments were changed for the convenience of human traditions the Romans had been practicing long before Constantine...such as worshiping a god on the first day of the week, called Deis Solis...now Sunday. The god that was worshipped, or celebrated (food and wine...not really reverent worship) was the god of the sun, Apollo. I took a humanities class in my California State University...the statue of baby Apollo was not replaced, only renamed to be baby Jesus. You ever wonder why you see glow rays or halos around images of Jesus in the ancient art? Apollo had those because he was the sun god....They always seemed to show a little baby angel around images of Jesus...did you know that Cupid/Eros was baby Apollos' best bud? The scriptures never taught that Mary should be revered or prayed to. Jesus taught that all should come before His Father God in His name...and no other should be prayed to. Catholicism was not "first Christianity". Christ's Way taught humility and self-sacrifice. Did the papacy resemble any kind of humility with all the pomp and riches that were squeezed out of the masses trying to purchase salvation and forgiveness which Christ had already paid for 360 or so years before the "Holy Roman Empire"/Catholic Church started?

There are so many denominations because the progression away from the false religion was in steps...there are many that refused to step beyond their family traditions...as new truths were revealed because people gained access to the Holy Bible, instead of listening only to the priests interpretations people moved from that which was dark to a less dark place. Some refused to move fearing change or not accepting the new truths. So as each group progressed toward truth, there were and are people who did not make that step...thus factions and new religious systems developed, but did not replace the predecessors. This is what one might call spiritual Babylon. Are you open minded to hear that call to "come out of her"...?
Prophecies teach that there will be a true Church in the end times that will keep the Commandments of God, and the Testimony of Jesus Christ, which is the Spirit of Prophecy. Keeping those commandments will be out of love and obedience, it's not the same as legalistic fear.

In practice, Evangelicalism doesn't derive its teachings from Scripture, and it doesn't attempt to. It derives it either from some sort of systematic "theology" such as Dispensationalism, from an eclectic approach to whatever ideas and experiences entice, or through a charismatic leader. Consequently, since Scripture isn't as important as they make it out to be, they use only snippets, only what they need to use for a hammer.

I used to be a Baptist, and most of them don't read the Bible often. They read apologetics works and things like that, but not often the Bible. In that sense, it isn't much different than the average Orthodox or Catholic. In their books, though, they are given a battery of Scriptures to memorize. Every Baptist knows the Baptist proof text in Eph. 2.8-9, but not a one of them will ever quote James 2.24. They'll give a sermon out of Jn. 3.16, but nobody will preach from Jn. 6.54, and they certainly won't preach anything from the Apostolic Fathers.

It isn't really all that different than us, but we don't make any pretensions about the fact, and most of them aren't aware of where the Bible came from, how it was transmitted, or any other such thing. They just assume the Early Church was like them, and that they rediscovered the true faith that had been corrupted long before. It's sad, given how many attempt at piety and firmly believe, but it is the reality. It's the tragedy of sin.

I think a significantly large number of Protestants don't even know the history of their own faiths. Much less the true origins of Christianity.

Many of them are told the Constantine-lie. We're all familiar with that. Constantine hijacked Christianity and out came Catholicism. Not true! Nothing changed with Constantine. All of that can be seen in the writings of the Early Church Fathers.

How many times do we have to say We Do Not Worship Mary?

For my friend who wants to talk about the crusades and Catholics supposedly burning good men, you might want to do a little research on the Protestant inquisition. Luther persecuted millions. Henry VIII persecuted millions. His daughter Elizabeth I persecuted millions. yadda yadda

The Holy Spirit is your primary guide to lead you into the truth.

Bible expositors and pastors can help. But they are only human and can miss it. The same thing can apply to bishops, and of course the bishop of Rome, who is perhaps usually well-chosen and unusually wise, but isn't God.

Meditate the Word with the help of the Holy Spirit.
Also if you receive the gift of praying in tongues, for edification, and do this at the end of the day, for half an hour, the Holy Spirit prays out the comprehension of the Word you have read - you are edified, i.e. built up.

i might think of this has greater to do with the congregational form and if the denom. is greater ritualized, than something. accomplishing a worship provider is a undertaking, and that i will generally tell if the Pastor is familiar with what he's doing. yet, understanding what the needed end consequence could be, i think of the only thank you to choose the effectiveness of the artwork may be to look for the fruit in the lives of the hearers, not if somebody is asserting Amen. i've got seen zombies in each and every denom. i've got visited. and that i began off in a Catholic church. the 1st one to unquestionably clarify Christ's artwork to me befell to be a Catholic priest...it rather is a few thing the Southern Baptists hated to hearken to me say. in basic terms theory i might upload that.

They believe that the Bible is a factual document, when it is a group of docments slimmed down from a large number of books to just a few. They refuse to accept that it is a collection of opinions and beliefs, which were highly subjective and very far removed from the type of publishing standards we have today.

They believe that everyone else sees the same interpretation of the scripture verse they see, it doesn't even enter their mind that someone else could possible have a different interpretation than they do or that they could possibly be misinterpreting it out of context. Massive egocentrism is the real answer to your question.

Billy, my friend, they believe that they are the only ones who can possibly interpret the Bible. And every one of those hundreds of 'non-denominational' sects each have a different interpretation...imagine that.

Remember the warning that heretical doctrines would arise - well they have indeed.

Case in point - look at the comment by Lazarus "are you one of the dead denominations"

The whole Word of God is "Proof Text". I don't take things out of context, you can't, not and do harm to your spiritual life, for when you do you have to keep doing it, to keep justifying your point of view. I give the Holy Scriptures power over my entire being when I study it, exegetically and I am in the process of developing what I define as "whole book" contextual learning, where I take a book at a time and read it for what it will reveal to me.

The Bible is full of versus that CANNOT be taken out of context. Some can. For example: "Jesus Wept". Then that should make people wonder......"why did he weep". Pops
