Sell yourself first! People will buy from people they like, especially if they feel that you have their best interest in mind. Treat others the way you would want to be treated. (The Golden Rule).

Be friendly, helpful, and genuinely try to find a solution to the customers need or problem.

Sell them what they want, and suggest extra items that would make their original purchase work better. (Like batteries for an Ipod, or an extra top to go with an outfit for more variety.)

Don't be pushy. People hate that. But alot of people want and need assistance, and do your very best to give them what they need.

Know your product inside and out. Think of all the ways it will benefit your potential customer. Then when the customer comes in, teach them why your product is right for them.

Follow through with your customer. In a clothing store, don't put them in the fitting room and leave! Be there to get them different sizes or suggest extra items. Selling high tech? Talk in plain english and show them how things work. Find the best product for them.

Let them know about any special offers you have going on, like free paper with a printer purchase, or buy one, get one free deals. If you have a coupon in a store flyer, and it will save them, use it. In the long run, they will trust you and come back to you time and time again.

Be patient and kind when a disgruntled customer comes your way. Listen to the problem, and find a solution. Never get into an argument. If there is a question of store policy against returns or something you can't do anything about, ask a manager to help you. Sometimes they can get around the system to make the customer happy.
If you can manage to take a really mad person and find a solution that works for them, you just gained a loyal customer, and the word of mouth about you will be good instead of bad.

Look, act, and behave professionnally. Be accessible, but respect personal space and shoppers who just want to look. Don't use "lines", you aren't in a pick up joint.

Spend your downtime learning about merchandise and keeping your area clean.

The simple rule-of-thumb in customer service and sales is:::
Satisfy the customer.

Talk to them and see what their needs are. Remember customers are people too and so if you treat them accordingly...then everything will work out.

Just be really really helpful and personable, talk to them and make them feel comfortable. Like that person said, "The customer is ALWAYS right", even when they are wrong. Make sure you know your product, and are very informative. Just be yourself, don't get overwhelmed and you should be fine.

Acknowledge your customer even if you are busy, to let them know you think they are important.

Nothing ticks me off more, than to be ignored when I am wanting service.

It's ok to be busy, but just let them know you will be with them in a few.
