If you're unsure of the person, ask them if you can ride along in the back seat or something..always have a friend with you that stays by your house and set a time limit. Ask to see their driver's license and insurance card if really in doubt. If their legit, it should not be a problem.

I would suggest NOT letting them go alone, mostly people are trust worth but if you're not sure, don't take the chance! I've sold a few cars on my own and I just don't feel like I would trust people enough. If they have a problem with you riding along then they're probably up to something! Make sure that you are ready to answer any questions as well. As far as them looking at the car, they are most likely going to want to check the entire car out (if they're serious about buying it) and will have alot of questions about it's history and maintennce. You're more likely to sell the car if you can provide the answers and documentation (oil changes, any services you've had done, etc).
good luck!

I had bought and sold used cars in the past to supplement my income until my wife made me stop. She said the business was inherently dishonest.
Well, anyway you do it is fine. There is no etiquette for selling a used car. If the person wants to take a spin by him / herself, then take down their driver license numbers and name. If you want to accompany that person then I would do the same and leave this information with a note of time and date of this test ride inside your home or with a friend for safety and future reference. Just use your common sense and a little intuition.

You should go with the person buying the car , if you feel comfortable with that person. try to not go by yourself if possible, ask a neighbor if you can, preferably a man,to go with you. Also you should sit in the back seat, which should something happen will make it easier for you to get out. i doubt anything will happen tho. Good Luck selling the car.

1. ALWAYS GO WITH THE BUYER OR HAVE SOMEONE THAT YOU KNOW GO WITH THEM.
2. ALWAYS CHECK THAT THEY HAVE INSURANCE AND CALL THE COMPANY TO VERIFY IT.
3. CALL AND NOTIFY YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY OF WHAT YOU ARE DOING.
4. VALID DRIVERS LICENSE.
5. DON'T GO WITH THE BUYER IF YOU ARE A WOMEN, I SAY THIS ONLY FOR SAFETY REASONS, TO MANY CRAZY PEOPLE ARE OUT THERE.
6. DON'T LET THE TEST DRIVE GO TO FAR, 3 TO 5 MILES IS PLENTY.

My rule of thumb became the 1st individual to strike a deal and the two pass away an substantial non-refundable money deposit or pay for it gets the motor vehicle. in case you have 3 people coming so quickly, you may desire to be underpricing it.
