I just watched this video for the first time:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLG-XYuB-Mc
After laughing hysterically on the inside for a while, I actually started to feel bad for the one guy who called in.
To him, the world must be a very magical place. So many unexplained mysteries... like how the body works or where the electricity that powers his appliances comes from.
So to a person like him, belief in God is NECESSARY to explain the wonders of the world. To him, there can be no other explanation because he cannot understand even the most basic processes... or maybe... refuses to understand the most basic of processes.

So my question is... are these people a lost cause?
Does anyone think maybe churches should probably be throwing in a couple biology or physics lessons to help people understand just how fantastically wonderful the world around them is? I'm an atheist, but even I know a God would not be happy to have ignorant followers who don't understand his creations.

Umm.. some of you may not have realized this, but I was not implying that all Christians were ignorant so stop saying that.
I was talking about people like the one who called in on the link I provided, who believed that the energy that powered his home came from lightening.
Ignorance is defined as a lack of knowledge. What you do with that knowledge is up to you, but in the case of the world around us, I feel it is there is no excuse to remain ignorant on at least a few basic principles.
There are some very intelligent Christians. I know that. So stop putting words in my mouth... errr... keyboard.

Yes, to believe "in a god" it is!

But to believe IN THE ONLY ONE AND TRUE GOD IT'S NOT!

Who defines ignorance, who defines acceptable?

It's quite clear from geographical studies that, while there are minority exceptions, most people adopt the religion (along with other cultural beliefs) of their family, their region.

It comes with the milk, and tends to be absorbed without much thought. It just "is" how things "are". It requires a certain exposure to other world views for comparative and critical thought to develop and most engrained religious (and political) views come with warnings against "the other side", which is often depicted as evil or foolish as an act of self-protection and group solidarity. And once a core view is firmly established it's no great trick to make all other data "fit" that central premise.

No it's not a lost cause... Some people do change their stance, having thought and considered. Some Christians become atheists, or Buddhists or turn to Islam. I've known atheists and Moslems and Buddhists become Christians.

But at least here discussion is possible. Though we are, I suspect, talking about the minority, across the planet.

It's ignorant to overgeneralize. There are many intellectual Christians. Read Francis and Edith Schaeffers thought provoking books.
Everyone is a philosopher some think deeper then others. When you've reached the limits of what science knows and teaches you still have basic questions. Like how could the complicated system of DNA translation and transcription to multiplication come about by evolution? How can gravity be an inherent property to mass? How did the lightweight elements come into being since they can't come about by fusion? How can the mass of the universe fit into an area as big as a dime?
When one asks these questions it is not all to difficult to think about an infinite-personal-creator being involved.

Ignorance is also the reason why many short-minded people, who think they know everything, are incapable to realize that everyone else have the right to believe in whatever they want. Look at yourself in a mirror when you need something to laugh about, you'll find a reason right in front of you.

I do not consider myself to be ignorant. Granted, I am no rocket scientist either. I think there is a God because He has revealed Himself to me. Is He necessary to my life? No. Just because i think there is a God does not mean that my brain shuts down. I think the bible is ridiculous fiction for the most part. I have no problem with God but I have a big problem with religion.

I take no offense to your question because religion is conducive to ignorance and denial.

there is definitely no connection between faith and morality. human beings being ethical is merely an version to persevering with our species. It is really simple.
What truth are you or the people on that show willing to accept?
It is your rite to accept or reject GOD as you choose. It must be an important issue. There seems to be a lot of people who need to justify their unbelief. If you have enough faith in yourself and the sources for your beliefs or lack of beliefs to bet your life on it., then my hat is off to you.

Yes they are. When I get something like that I have to make fun of it. That is the only way that I don't get depressed.

I answer questions like that kinda seriously here just because I know there is a side audience that might actually be rational.

1) Nobody is ever a lost cause, not so long as somebody gives a damn. That's one of the few things I believe without evidence.

2) Churches teaching science is probably a bad idea; look how poorly they actually teach religion, which is supposedly their area of expertise.

I think it is important to understand how the world works. True science glorifies the creator.
