I know it's impossible to disprove it (it's hypothetical!).

I'm wanting to know if religion is so deeply rooted in some people that they'd just go nuts if they found out it wasn't true?

Suzi B - I'm willing to bet a good number of Atheists would apologize (myself included).

It sounds like you are a person who is asking a sincere question - I don't get the sense that you are trying to be rude.
I gave this a few minutes of deep thought before answering, because I really want to give an honest answer. I am a Christian, and have devoted 35+ years in disiplined study of the manuscripts, and learned all three Biblical languages. One of your answerers is right when they say "all their lives are bound in that God". Thats true for the real Christian. For me, Christianity is not a religion, its a reality.
My real honest answer is, yes, I might become extremely depressed at best, if I were to find that beyond any doubt, God does not exist.
That would be something more than I would be prepared for mentally and spiritually.
My life is bound with God, and I feel esspecially happy that God is quite real.
I do think He is getting a laugh out of the question and some of the answers, though.

Nah, cause it is all faith based, so it's not really a question that can be answered even hypothetically. But that said- I think the psyche adapts, it is self protective. So in most cases I'd say no. I do think that the need for what we now call religion is very primal ...when you look at history and across religious doctrines, and across the world-you'll see that it's all pretty much the same theme throughout all recorded history...only the dates names and places get switched up. One of the driving forces of humanity is the need for something to believe in.

The doctors offices and mental wards would be full if that were to happen. You can't take away a person's foundation without repercussions. This type of foundation is based on faith, someone who protects you and takes care of you. It's based on no responsibility because no matter what happens you're in God's hands. The list goes forever, even into all the pertinent personal naive hangups that are common to those who believe in God. People's minds would snap left and right. A huge percentage of the Christian population would be in this category. They believe this is all they have and all that they are. You can easily see where this would lead.

Theists are not concerned about proof or they would not be theists.

Many Christians ignore the proof about evolution, the origin of the universe and all those other things and continue to go on their merry ways.

Proof that God did not exists (impossible as you rightly note) would just be ignored, along with everything else that disproves so many of their cherished myths.

Yeah like the scientists that realized the Big Bang MUST have a cause. That must be disturbing for any intillectual Atheists and from some of theur responses it is. Matter popping into existance from NOTHING? Now that takes Faith!!! LOL

I don't think you could ever disprove the existence of God to a True Believer, just like you'll never succeed in proving to a schizophrenic that he's not really Napoleon...

I doubt if they would go insane. They would probably continue to believe in the God of their understanding despite any evidence to the contrary.

No, like evolution or the big bang (which disproved all religous creation theories) they would either be ignored, pretended that that is what the religous texts say, or claim it is satan work.

You can't disprove god to those who won't listen.

And would all of the atheist apologize (it's hypothetical) if they found out they were wrong?

Of course. All their life is bound around that God.
