I have a female Maltese that I think is pregnant. Her vulva is still slightly swollen still, her breasts under her nipples are slightly swollen, she sleeps all the time, and constantly wants to be right next to me. I brought her to the vet on wednesday (she would have been 36 days/5 weeks along). The vet palpated her and said that he didn't think she was pregnant. However, I read that after 30 days you can no longer feel the pups by palpating, is this true and could it be that the pups are too small and he could have missed them? Also, he did it while she was standing in a normal position, is this right or should the dog be laying down? He also said that she had only gained 3 ounces and if she was pregnant she would have gained more, I read that they don't gain weight until after 5 weeks so what is he talking about? I'm worried that he might not know what he's doing. Should I trust him or find another vet?

No it is not true that after 30 days you can no longer feel the pups by palpating....it is possible to miss pups if they are being carried high up or are small. Yes he palpated correctly...the dog needed to be in a normal standing position. What you read about gaining weight is also not true..It sounds like your vet knows exactly what he is doing, however to be 100% for certain have an x-ray done (which is a good idea anyway)..then you'll know for sure.
All the symptoms you posted could indicate a false pregnancy as well as a real pregnancy.

If you're not happy with the information your vet has given you, find another one for all means. Don't rely on stuff you've read, here or elsewhere - find a vet you trust.
It may be that your dog is having a phantom pregnancy. They are hard to tell from real ones as they have all the same signs, including lactation! You can certainly feel pups by palpation, it's easier the closer to term they get, just like with humans.
To be sure of pregnancy, an xray or preferably an ultrasound needs to be conducted, but vets can usually tell easily by palpation. As I say, it's your prerogative to consult another vet.

First, how do you recognize for specific how a techniques alongside she is? Did you especially breed her? warmth cycles can final for an prolonged time, there could have been as much as a 20 day window wherein she could have been impregnated. in case you do comprehend for specific how a techniques alongside she'd be, i could wait yet another week or so and show screen her weight benefit. She ought to be experiencing a pretend being pregnant, that's fairly hassle-free in small canines. It mocks a being pregnant very heavily, with a some weight benefit, swollen nipples, neediness, and tiredness. now and returned fake pregnancies even produce milk. the main stable indicator stands out as the burden benefit, a pretend being pregnant won't produce substantial weight benefit, on a similar time as a real being pregnant will produce stable, substantial benefit. Wait a week or 2, take her in returned, and spot if she's won weight. If she hasn't, you will in all hazard in basic terms ought to attend it out till she stops her fake being pregnant. If she's without warning won better than in elementary terms some spare oz., and the vet nevertheless won't admit she's pregnant, you could the two call for an ultrasound (the wonderful attempt to confirm) or choose a clean vet. sturdy success the two way!

The best way to tell is she is pregnant is to have the vet do an ultrasound (after 28 days) or x-ray her (after 42 days)
Sometimes a dogs abdomen can be tense where it is difficult to palpate any pups. If you are uncomfortable with your vet's "daignosis" then certainly get a second opinion.

Hi
I had the same problem with my vet and found out really late that my dog was definitely having pups, so i had to go out and get everything that i thought i might need for her in quite a hurry. Try another vet cos she could be having a phantom pregnancy but then again it could be for real. My baby had 5 puppies in the end so much for my vet, i now use another vets practise. hope this helps you.

After you find out for sure and she has the pups if that is the case, get her spayed. In the US alone, every six seconds and animal is put to sleep. There are simply not enough homes for all the pets that are being born. Litters and litters are put to sleep everyday for this very reason. Be part of the solution and not the problem by spaying and neutering your pets, and by adopting a pet from you local shelter instead of a breeder or pet store or puppy mill.

Well, if the vet says your dog is not pregnant what does he/she think the symptoms indicate? A second opinion seems to be in order if you got no answer whatsoever. I used to be a vets assistant.

Even if your vet is the best in the world, you're always entitled to a second opinion. If you feel it's warranted, then get one, both for your dog and your own peace of mind.

You sound like a caring and conscientious dog owner. Treat your dog as you would treat yourself. If you don't think that this vet knows what he's doing, get a second opinion!

It never hurts to get a second opinion. You could also try returning to your vet and asking for an xray or ultrasound.
