We have 4 cats. 2 of which have recentley gotten ear mites. is there a way to keep this from spreading to my other 2 cats?

how can ear mites be brought into our house? is it only from another animal? or something in the air?

and are ear mites cureable or are they a permanent problem? The reason I ask is because I remember my uncle having a dog who had to be treated with drops for ear mites his whole life.

We have been cleaning out the cats ears with a q-tip and an antibacterial wash...and really don't know what to do from here,

thanks

The earmites probably got into your house somehow, if you allow your cats outdoors then they brought them in , if not somebody brought them in, a shoe, a box, another pet, a rat, etc. You need to take your 4 guys to the vet and have their ears clean, it's really painful for them but the earmite doesn't go away so easily since they deposit their eggs in the inner ear, only a vet can clean this, don't try it at home or you'll hurt your kitties. Once is clean your vet will give you medication.

You should keep your pets on spot on medication like Revolution, it keeps fleas and earmites at bay and you don't have to worry about reinfestation. You should also clean your house very well, vacuum everything.

It is curable. Most likely your uncle never cleaned the source of the earmites, he just kept medicating his dog, if you cut the earmite source you will have a clean house and earmites-free pets.

There are different types of ear mites. They can be caught from other animals, or picked up from the environment.

Go to your vet for a suitable treatment, the mites need killin' and antibacterial wash is not going to do this. If you use the spot-on Revolution this protects against fleas, tapeworms and ear mites.

Ear mites are spread from animal to animal. If 2 of your 4 cats have ear mites, the chances are that the others will get them too. I would first treat the infected cats(go to the vet and they will give you medicine) and keep a close watch on the other cats. If they scrath their ears or have black specs(mite poo) in their ears, then go ahead and treat them too.

If two have ear mites...they either all have them or will get them in the near future. I would get ear mite treatment from your vet and treat all four cats. There are drops you can put in the ear daily for 6 weeks (Otomite) or there is a prescription out there that is a one time treatment...but it is kind of expensive...but like I said, a one time treatment (Acarexx)

The mites will go away with treatment...as long as you treat all of them at the same time :)
