First of all, what you receive from the IRS is a refund. Your return is what you send them. When you file your additional return, any refund is sent automatically before your return is actually reviewed. When you file an amended return, the IRS actually reviews the return before sending any additional refund. The IRS says it takes 8 to 12 weeks to process an amended return.
