I posted this question as my boyf doesnt understand why people (especially women im ashamed to admit) give him dirty looks or smart comments when he holds open doors. As im sure you all know the question was meant to be tongue in cheek. Why cant people be grateful when others are courteous and polite?

There is much more to chivalry than opening doors. I've told this story on here before, but I think it is worth repeating. An older gentleman was holding a door open for a young lady, she told him that he didn't have to hold it because she was a lady, he replied, I'm not holding it because you're a lady, I'm holding it because I'm a gentleman. I don't care how many times I hear this story, or tell this story, I love it. So direct and to the point.

In my opinion, there aren't many out there with manners. Some women might just think that because a man is opening the door for them, he wants something from them; they're just stupid. I hear all the time, when I open doors for the elderly, that I'm such a nice girl and they don't see many people like that anymore.

A lot of the people I know are kind and have manners. But I'm sure out of my circle of people there are others that don't have chivalry in them. It's dying out as the years pass.

I hold doors open for ladies. It is polite and courteous thing to do.
If a lady takes offence at my manners then she is obviously a lesbian and wants to be treated like one of the boys.

I take no notice of this feminist bulls**t. Feminisim was created by lesbians. Manners and polite gestures are being eroded all the time and people should be promoting good manners.
Lesbians are only good for watching :-)

No. A true gentlemen will let a lady enter the automatic door before he does. He will also let a lady enter a bus, train, etc. before he does. He will still hold the passenger door open for a lady, then walk around to the driver's seat. There are still some gentlemen out there...

Chivalry isn't dead, it's just in hiding. The women's lib movement pretty well pushed a lot of chivalrous behavior out of fashion. I like to consider myself a gentleman and as a rule I try to open doors for women, offer to carry things for them, etc., but I've actually had a couple instances where the woman yelled at me for trying to imply she's inferior or weak by doing what I felt was just being polite.

Chivaly still there, I didn't notice any of it when I was in high school but when I left I noticed it alot. Men do open doors for you, otherwise to let you in first or just holding it open behind them as they walk in. I get let on the bus first as males stand back, not all of them but it happens a bit! It's manners, females can open doors too you know!

No, it ended when the PC brigade decide that when a man who is just being polite holds a door open for a lady he is showing signs of sexist behaviour.

I have unbelieveable been accussed of this in a well known shopping chain store, so ladies I am afraid you can't have it both ways - hold your own doors open from now on!!

No, it ended with snotty women getting all uptight over men opening doors for them.
Now, men are afraid to open a door for a woman because they don't want to be harangued for treating a woman as "weak".

No, There are places where a man can open a door for a woman. He can open the car door for her, too.

I don't think so. I really think it has to do with children being taught manners (or a lack of it). My fiance always opens doors for me, and so do most men I know. I also open doors for other people. I just think it's common courtesy.
