The question is... WHICH Mac do you have?

System 8.6 is considered the "classic" Mac OS, and it exists for the original Motorola 68xxx series. CPUs as well as PowerPC CPUs. OS X, on the other hand, the latest version, i.e. Tiger, does NOT support G3 and earlier Macs, though there are hacks available to make them run, just not officially supported.

First, you'll need to determine what Mac are you going to use. Control on Mactracker (http://mactracker.dreamhosters.com/) if your Mac can support OS X. If you can locate your mac model, and it say you can, go on with the installation.
If not, find a 9.2.2 Classic OS, then install XPostFacto and let it do all the work (http://eshop.macsales.com/OSXCenter/XPostFacto/).
