not sure hun but my surname used to be knight!

Neither one. The name comes from the office of Knight at Arms serving the king, goes right back to the Middle Ages before protestantism existed.

This surname is very widespread and can be traced to various countries including England,Spain and Italy as well as Ireland, it is as old as kingdoms themselves and would have various derivatives according to the local language.
It is very unlikely to be of Protestant origin as the name was in existence long before the Reformation.
