Would we be sitting here in front of our computers arguing about whether the Mahatma was really born of a virgin and whether Martin had really healed those lepers?

And reading "I have a dream..." instead of the Sermon on the Mount.

I honestly prefer Martin to Jesus on this one.

I doubt it. They might have joined forces and created a non-violent environment in which the violent types were pushed to the fringes, and we'd be in a great deal better shape today than we are.

This is not to suggest that Jesus was a violent man, although he was pretty hard on those money-changers in the temple. But the use of force was so much a part of that world that maybe even those two heroes of non-violence could not have prevented their followers from taking up the sword.

Imagine: crusades to force others out of the places made sacred by the Prince of Peace. Enough to give anyone an ulcer just thinking about it!

Stuff like the virgin birth and walking on water shouldn't matter to real Christians. Any truth that can be taken from the NT is taken from philosophy, the crazy miracles performed are a distraction.

They would have been put to the sword. That's why Rome was judged, and found lacking. The US, as lousy as it can be, at least felt the pricks of conscience, when they were forced to confront racism, bigotry, oppresion, etc. It's an ongoing judgement though.
