Hey!! I too used to carry a Remington 870, but we carried them at work, not hunting. The Remington 870 Police Mag. were very reliable and sturdy firearms. I can certainly bet my life on them, and I did!! I'm certain the modern semi-autos are dependable too, but I can't speak from experience about them, just the pump-action.

as mentioned, a pump is more accurate and less likely to jam. It also is a littel more intimidating than a semi-auto. How would you feel when you are rading a house and hear a CHK-CHHK. Id probly jump out fo the nearest window-open or closed. The remigton 870 is a very good gun and it has a great reputation, but so do the 11-87 and the otehr Semi-auto Remingtons. Ideally, any shotgun will ge the job done, it is pretty much based on budget and fondness.

WTF? "More inaccurate but faster"? "Semiauto is controllable bursts"? Obviously this poster has never actually operated a shotgun of any kind. Pumps are just as accurate as semis, and you CAN operate one as fast, if not faster, than a semi IF YOU PRACTICE. Semiauto shotguns fire exactly like every other semiauto weapon; one round with every pull of the trigger. There are no "bursts", controllable or otherwise.
Ok. Enough trying to dispel the mythology.
Advantages of a pump over a semiauto:
1)Pumps are much less likely to jam using light target or reduced recoil loads. In fact, a pump will not jam at all if properly handled, clean and in good repair.
2)You can switch ammo types more quickly in a pump, i.e., switching from buck to slug.
3) The sound of cycling the action on a pump shotgun has been known to make burglars soil themselves, or so I've been told.
4) Pumps have no gas system or pistons, and are easier to clean.
5) You can put a pistol grip on a pump, to make it shorter and handier. Some semiautos, like the Benelli M1 Super90 cannot accept a pistol grip because the recoil system is housed in the stock.

A pump action is more reliable then a semi auto although you can under stroke it with certain shotguns. Pump guns can shoot all the ammo you put in it where semi auto shotguns are alittle more picky about what you feed them. A pump action has alittle more recoil then a semi auto aswell. With practice you can almost be just as fast but the semi auto is still faster and easier to keep on target for follow up shots because you don't have to change your grip and manually **** it. I have both a semi auto and pump shotguns a wilson combat custom remington 870 pump and a remington 1187 semi-auto that I worked on myself and like both of them for different reasons. My brother has a benelli m4 super 90 semi-auto and it puts both of those shotguns to shame. But I have only had one jam with my 1187 and that was a fluke thing all in all I'd say it's personal preference.

A pump action is less suceptable to jams. They are almost as fast. I have a Remington 870 shotgun in 20 ga. and I love it. I have vast experience with 870's and have never experienced a malfunction. Most modern semi-auto's are very reliable too but they will never have the record that the 870 has.
I don't know where marcc got his info but a pump is in general slightly more accurate than a semi auto. If you have a semi-auto that will fire a burst of shots if you hold the trigger down, turn it in to police before you get arrested.

The only advantage a pump action would have over a semi automatic (we are talking hunting shotguns here???) is conservation of ammo. Working the pump gives the shooter time to re-consider his target rather than giving in to an impulse, quick second shot.

autos are faster because you don't have to pump to shoot.......obviously....... and pumps are a little more reliable because their are less moving parts..... but semi's last for years so don't think your getting jipped they make autos mostly for needed quick follow up shots or skeetshooting when they throw quick doubles and stuff i prefer a auto over a pump becasue you just load up the shells and unload them on your target...........its simple and pumps are easier to clean semiauto's have moire parts

Pumps are more reliable because they do not rely on gas from the round to cycle the auction to load another round. They are more accurate because they do not use the gas form the round to cycle another, therefore all the gas pressure is used to force the shot or slug through the barrel & into the target.
