I once saw Robert Tilton (a pseudo-televangelist) speak in tongues. Talk about a hoot!
I think he was saying "send me more money."

I think it's very possible. I believe the purpose was to spread the Word to others that can't speak your language. However it appears to be a "show" today. Went to a church that pushed a few people to recite in tongues on que. It was embarassing. As people tried to babel. Think it's a true gift with a purpose that's being abused today to show off.

Yes....since December 5th, 1989 while meditating on the Annunciation by the angel to the Virgin Mary...."the Holy spirit will come upon you..." It comes over me automatically during Mass every week during the elevation of the Sacred Host (not aloud, though)....I pray quietly in my heart but I do not know exactly what I am saying -- or in what language. To me it is indistinguishable. It is pure gift.

Yes, I've seen Christians pray in tongues, but they were drug users and alcoholics so I guess it doesn't say much for it. Anyone can speak gibberish and work themselves into a holy frenzy, maybe suicide bombers do something similar before they go to at it.

I pray in Arabic although I wasn't sure of what it meant until i got it translated... so I am basically speaking in a language I understand for that part.

It's not a gift. Psycho babble is a sign of mental illness.

Yes I often wiggle my tongue and scream while praying. I also asphyxiate myself and clutch my testicles.
