Here are some tips.
1- Have a good breakfast, rich in proteins. Carbohydrates are allowed, but it's better to avoid sugars and refined wheat products (white bread). Some fat (olive oil) will make you feel full longer.
2- Have lunches and dinners rich in protein and vegetables (both cooked and raw). Low on the carbs.
3- Do not take anything at least 3 hours before you go to sleep.
4- Do not take any sugars immediately after your meals (better to avoid sugars altogether). If you have to, it should be at least 1 hour after the meal.
5- You can take snacks in between meals, but in the form of raw vegetables or fruits.
6- Avoid all types of soda as they contain very high content of sugar. Replace with fruit juice.
7- Drink a lot of water.
8- Low on beer as it have a high caloric content.
Well that should not be a starving kind of diet, but it made me lose 5 Kg in two weeks (I think that's more than 10 lb).

find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, light weight training
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

Starving yourself causes your metabolism to slow way down and then whatever you eat gets turned into fat. Eat nutricious foods in normal size portions. Also, there are good exercises to do that aren't hard or boring: walking, swimming, riding a bike or working in a garden, etc.
