This custom dates back to cave man times.
cavemen from a rival tribe would raid a cave or settlement and take women. they would then tie the women up once they learned to stay they wouldn't be tied up anymore the caveman would tie a peice of string round their finger just as a reminder of what would happen if they left. This custom continues to this day of putting a ring on a womans finger

I asked this same question to my grandmother two weeks ago and she told me that back in the day when wedding rings and engagement rings were first made they put them on the third finger because everyone said that the third finger had a vein that went straight to the heart. Hopes this helps.

It's the third finger on the right hand. It's generally the hand that most people take care of, and the finger is least likely to get blown off. The pinky is way too small for the ring and the thumb is way too awkward.

in the old days before real autopsies etc. it was believed that the "ring" finger held a vein that went straight to the heart thus showing a strong and heart feld bond between the two parties. however that has been proven false but like many traditions they last thru the ages. good luck

That certain "finger" shows that you are married and in love. If you wear the ring on a different finger, it shows a different message like, "I'm single" or something like, "I'm can go on a date with you if you ask"
You should be proud ever day you wear that ring, knowing that you are married.

The third finger on your left hand is said to have a vein that goes directly to the heart, that's why your ring is worn there.
Or atleast that's the reason I have always been given

Alot say it is because the left finger is some how connected closer to the heart, but my belief is when you stand and face the one you love your right hand is placed on their left and your left is placed on their right. Right means 'right'!! When you hold hands the two fingers that stay connected in most positions is the third. Everyone has their own opinion and beliefs, this one is mine.

It's because it was believed that the direct "heartline" started at the tip of the 4th finger on the left hand and went to the heart!

It was thought that the artery going through the third finger left hand was closest to the heart.
