Assalamu Alaikom Brothers & Sisters,

I've been working on this research in the Holy Qur'an, until I reached Verse 18 in Surat Annaml, where it says in the Arabic word "Yahtemannakom" "لا يحطمنكم سليمان و جنوده و هم لا يشعرون"

Some say that an Australian scientist discovered that 80 to 90% of Ants are made from glass.

But I need to be sure 100%, I searched in Harunyahya.com, in Wikipedia, in 55a.net, in Yahoo & Google. but I found NOTHING.

My question, Is it true that Ants are made from glass?
please give me a link that mentions the name of the one that discovered that and in which year.

May ALLAH bless you all.
Ameen!

Samantha, Yahtemannakom means crush, if Ants are Crush as Allah says, then Ants MUST be made from Glass or something hard like glass.

Wa Alaikum Salaam

If Yahtemannakom means crush, doesn't this make sense with respect to ants having an exoskeleton, which is really like a suit of armour but made out of a shell-like material. The exoskeleton means a skeleton, as we have a skeleton, but which is outside the body in their case, unlike ours which is inside our body. This exoskeleton is composed largely of chitin, which makes it shell-like. Arthrapods, such as shellfish and snails (crustaceoans), and insects, also have a chitinous exoskeleton and if they they are big enough for you to hear the sound then that external skeleton would make a crushing sound under your feet. If you have ever accidentally stepped on a snail then you will know the "crushing" sound.

Chitin is a long-chain polymeric polysaccharide, not too dissimilar to cellulose. Caterpillars have an exoskeleton of chitin but it is quite soft and pliable. In arthropods, chitin is usually modified hy a process called sclerotisation to form sclerites, which are embedded in a matrix cross-linked with proteinaceous (membrane) regions.

So surely, with their exoskeleton, they would certainly make a crushing/crunching sound if they were stepped on, to ears that can hear it.

WaSalaam

Hello.
it is said inside of Qur'an that An ant called other ants to escape from Solomon & his Army not to be Broken with them(under their legs) (Quran 27:18).
it is not true to say that ant's exoskeleton is made of glass. it is made of chitin and is often biomineralized with materials such as calcium carbonate(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthropod_exoskeleton).
you should mention that this external skeleton is breakable like a human bone(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exoskeleton).

Ants exoskeleton is made up of cellulose-like material called chitin, not only ants though. Crabs too. But from their to glass you need to do your own research because I now nothing of chemistry, it does look like from what I read that if you relax it (or something) then it becomes glass. But let us know

"Ants might have an exoskeleton made up of silica which is the basic component of glass."

A thoughtful answer but actually wrong, an insects exoskeleton is actually made from chitin, which is a kind of protien, and is also what makes the cell walls of fungi.

The Surah takes its name from the phrase wad-in-naml which occurs in verse 18, implying that it is a Surah in which the story of An-Naml (the Ant) has been related. It doesn't imply that ants are made of glass.
