Autism is a brain disorder that often interferes with a person's ability to communicate with and relate to others. You can read more about it here
http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/autism/index.htm
There are about 3000 new cases each year. You can read some statistics at these two sites

Last year the statistic of autism was 1 out of every 166 children are diagnosed, now they (experts) say 1 out of 150 kids. Autism cause is not yet known. Some say genetics other say vaccines, and some say environment. Though research has shown that vaccines have no role in it, I really think it is a mixture of all but that is only my opinion. As I do have a son who has high functioning autism and have several friends that have kids w/ autism, some have more than 1 child that are on the spectrum. As there is more than 1 type of autism it is referred to as the spectrum and no 2 child has the same kind of symptoms, they are like snowflakes.

No one know what causes autism. I have grown up with autism in my family and have found that if you don't accept it, or try to make them stop being autistic it's doesn't go well. Now, I'm not saying leave them to be vegetables, I'm saying try to reach and understand them, help them communicate, but don't force them to be something they're not. Love them unconditionally, don't make approval dependent on normalcy.

No-one has ever found out exactly what causes Autism...but the theory is that it is a neurological illness.

There is a link between autism and vaccinations. These are children that were born normal but regressed to this autistic state at some stage later. Read this article:
http://www.westonaprice.org/children/autism.html
It is not just autism that is linked to vaccinations but also: hyperactivity, ADHD, autoimmune diseases, allergies, cot death and learning disabilities. There are several articles out there on this subject. If you are interested then you could borrow a book from your library, try this one:

i keep thinking it might have something to do with chemicals in products (personal care, foods, preservatives, cleaning, etc) we are exposing ourselves to hundreds of times everyday. i think that these chemicals can not only accumulate in our bodies, but i think that they are transferred to the babies in the womb when they are exposed to it, especially in the first trimester of development.
there is a lot of talk about the vaccines, another thing which i can add to my chemical category too.
some might be genetic...but, how come there was so little of it a while back when life was more simple & choices were fewer & way more of it these days when we don't even go anywhere without stuff like our antibacterial lotions, etc.?
just my thoughts.
peace!

There is no known cause for autism, yet.

Reportedly, there has been an abnormal increase. What causes is mysterious - some say it is inherited; some say it is simply a sign of slow development of a child and so on. Speech therapy can be useful.
