Im 15 years old and im looking to go into the medical field...specifically surgery. I know its going to take a lot of hard work and schooling which is why i would like to start studying now. My mom is a vet technician and has all these books that show the animal's muscles and bones that she needs to learn and i was wondering if they have that for humans like a site or book that would allow me to learn the bones and muscles of the human body. I have a great memory and i believe that by learning these early on will really help. Any ideas on this??

heyy im 17 and since i was about 6 i have been dead set on pursuing a medical career... eventually i want to become a surgeon, specializing in trauma surgery in the ER... its my passion...theres nothing else i want more.

So:

my best advice to you for getting experience and getting exposure into medical professions (other than reading text books and studying diagrams and taking the basic subject classes in HS) is to become an Emergency Medical Technician. You have to wait till ur 16 to take the course, but contact your local EMS and see what their protocols are for members (if they allow junior members, if its volunteer or paid or wutevs), and then find a course... they sometimes offer it through community colleges and stuff, so check that out.

Seriously its been probably the most beneficial thing i could possibly have done to get exposed to the field of medicine. i have learned so much, seen so much, and im constantly being forced to apply everything that i know. I deal with real people, real emergencies, real life and death situations... its pure reality.

Also, having an EMT certification for 2 years you can then work as an ER Tech... Im planning to do that while im in college... seriously the more experience and exposure the better

its a HUGE commitment... the class is over 100 hours, and every three years you need to take at least 48 CEUs to maintain certification... not to mention the actually stand by/ call time that is required of the squad... especially doing this while balancing school work, sports, and a job. But if you have the passion an the motivation to do it, it is an INCREDIBLE opportunity to have an introduction into the world of medicine.
as of now, thats probably one of the best things you could do to jump start a medical career... you get knowledge, experience, exposure, and not to mention it looks absolutely FABULOUS on a college resume!! lol

best of luck!

Yeah they have plenty of books like that. You can go to any decent library and find a book on anatomy. I spend my life scrutinising over them in preparation for my anatomical examinations.

In your case, however, I wouldn't waste time learning this stuff at your age. You are much too young. At the moment make sure you get excellent grades at school and then maybe get a part time job at a hospital or a residential care home if there is one nearby. Being a surgeon takes a lot more than possessing knowledge of the human body, you have to be able to demonstrate that you are capable of caring for other person.

Getting into medical school is a challenge these days. The selection panel expect excellent grades from their candidates and plenty of work experience in the appropiate jobs. By working hard at school and as a premed at college you will be already laying down the foundation for an excellent career in surgery, and then maybe if you fancy becoming an orthopeadic surgeon your career will accelerate past my own and I will have to answer to you.

Incidentally, the bodies are real - the artificial preservatives give them a mummy like appearance.

I was about 8 when I decided to be a surgeon and looking back at how things worked out I now realize how unlikely it was at that point that I would end up actually being one. I would suggest you take things one step at a time. Concentrate on your studies. You will have the opportunity to learn anatomy when you need to. Biology, Physics and Chemistry are what you need to focus on at this point. That having been said, if you really want to have fun with Anatomy, follow this link to access an online version of the classic text of human anatomy

whoa back horsie! Getting way ahead of yourself. Does your school have AP courses? Get into the science ones if they do. Just take it as it comes, get A and P I and II out of the way in Freshman year college. Keep the GP up, major in premed, bio or chem, and do well.
