Penalty points remain on your licence for four years, after which time you can apply to have them removed. They count against you for totting purposes for three years and the overlap is in case you commit another offence towards the end of the three year period and there is a delay in bringing you to court and hearing the case.

It all depends on what offence the points were issued and if you were disqualified . Also your age and when you passed your driving test . But you can also get points when learning to drive . Its as short as 56 days to 11 years . But as there is a fee and a form to fill in is there any point if they are spent . I looked on line at the DVLA .

theyre in effect for three years but you cant have them removed for four years, so if you have 3 points put on in september 2003 and you got another 3 points now, you would only have 3 points but the old endorsement would still show on your licence even though its not in effect
