It means 'in the fashionable manner', so, for example, the famous French evergreen, 'Boeuf à la mode' is beef prepared in the manner that was fashionable at the time the dish was created for the first time. You might say that present day restaurant presentations using every manner of 'foams' is quite 'à la mode' right now, or maybe it's already 'so last season' but that's another discussion altogether... :-)

(It is also used in another sense, with a qualifier behind it: 'â la mode de [whatever]', for example 'â la mode de Carême', i.e. 'done Carême's way'; the context will always show you which is which.)

Means: creation of... In a french Restaurant eg a menu or prepared "à la mode du Chef" means - his own style. But in other terms it can also mean: it's trendy (for fashion) or a lifestyle.
