No, it isn't normal. This would be classed as excessive drinking, which is usually a sign of diabetes.

Please take your dog to the vets - a simple blood test can confirm if he is diabetic or not. Excessive drinking may also be a sign of kidney problems, so get it checked out.

My Grandma's Yorkie had this promblem. Nikki would always drink water constantly. My Grandma tried to limit her intake of water and would cut her off about 7 pm at night because she was peeing in bed at night because my grandma would not wake up to take her out. I finally took her to the Vet and she has a kidney infection and disease, which the Vet said if she would have taken her in sooner like 6 months sooner they could have prevented it or made it less painful for Nikki. Now Nikki is on presiciption dog food for kidney disease and has to have fluid intakes 2 a week. So don't wait on this!

I would have to agree with Chalice if this isn't normal for your dog you need to have him tested for those two things.

Another things to think about here is when you say you took the water away. When you take water away from a dog they think that is all they are going to get so when they do get it they will drink and drink.. Never take water away from a dog. Your dog should have water at all times. Try leaving fresh water down all the time..Once he knows he can have it with not limits he just might stop drinking so much. I think I would try that first.

I have a german shepherd who'll do the same .Then he comes to me gagging so I can let him out to throw up.He's 3 now and still has'nt learned he can't overload his stomach with that much water.Dummy.
When we hear him at the water bowl we yell at him to get out of it.He will but will go right back to it.I've found that if I carry a bottle of water with me and give him several small drinks during exercise he does'nt hit the water dish so hard when we get home all the time.

NO, it's not normal & could signal something serious. If it was my dog , we'd be at the vet. Better safe than sorry. no matter who has had experience with this symptom, only the vet can diagnose your dog.

i have a weimaraner who is as big, if not bigger, than a boxer, and he can't go outside for hardly 10 minutes without drinking a whole bowl, and if he's still thirsty, he'll go for the toilets. good luck and leave the lid down!!

Sounds like diabetes to me or renal problems. Get to a veterinarian.
