A large pile of rotting nightcrawlers--had to be dozens of them--were dumped at the very back of our yard in some brush. My puppy got out and before we were able to locate him, he inhaled the whole pile! They were rotting and reeked terribly (and now so does he, even after a bath!). I know live worms generally are considered a good source of protein, but these were rotten and rancid and covered in some weird brown flies. I am afraid they are going to make him very ill... Any suggestions? This would have to happen on a Friday night when the vet is closed, of course.

Update: our puppy (Tiger Woods is his name) seems to be doing well thus far. He is eating, drinking, and acting as normal. No vomiting or diarrhea as I expected. I bathed him twice again today and used some groomer's cologne, so the smell seems to have dissipated. Thanks for all of your imput. And just for the record, I live in a very rural area and there are no 24 hour emergency vet centers here, or even vet hospitals--only privately owned vet clinics. The only option is to bother one's vet at home, which is why I sought out general information online. That searching brought me to this site, where I asked my question and you (mostly) kind folks offered your (mostly) helpful answers. Thanks again! =)

He might have an upset stomach and diarrhea, but he should be fine....Puppies eat some really nasty things and are fine. Just out of curiosity is he a Lab.... cause they eat everything.

Keep an eye on him.Believe me,I've seen some creepy crap that dogs consider delicious. If they were intended as bait, they're most likely free from any poison or anything harmful. If they puupy throws up,that's probably a good thing.Just make sure for the next few days that he gets plenty of clean water. And if he doesn't want to eat, that's okay,as long as he's drinking.Anything more than a few days would warrant a trip to the vet.

All fish love blood worm. But some can be too big. They will benefit from the blood worm as they become healthier, more active, and more likely to breed. Sharks will definelty benefit from it. Also try giving them not only Bloodwor, but also daphina.... All fish love this type of food and will often eat what you put in their tank. They will even eat, sprouts, pease, cabbage and more greens. Good luck

Remember our dogs came from the wild.
I think the worse thing that will happen is that the puppy might have diarrhea, which is good because that means his body is just getting rid of what he ate.

OH boy what pups wont put in their mouths and eat!!! He may just get really sick and vomit. I'd keep him in a area that you can easily clean up vomit. Watch his stools for the next few days too. If your very concerned call your vet in the morning.
Good luck!!

Try to call Petco or some petstore that may know something, they might also have a product to clear out your puppies system.

Bullshit! There are such things as emergency vets. Get off the computer, off your butt, and take your puppy in.

if he doesn't throw up on his own i would try to induce it, you might have to force it, but a cap of pepto bismol will make him throw up. he might even drink it voluntarily im sure my dogs would, good luck!
